ABSTRACT

Disability is the consequence of an impairment that can be physical, cognitive, mental, sensory, emotional, developmental, or combinations of theseIn the present scenario, around 1.6 percent of Indian population are included in the criteria of physically challenged. Current review of literature suggests that physical disability has multiple negative effects on an individuals expectation from self and others, life goals and aspirations. They have cynical attitude towards their life and require extensive motivation to develop positivity and hope in their life. This interested the researcher to explore the effect of motivational movies on coping strategies of physically challenged people. A sample of 100 physically challenged adults of 20 to 35 years of age were administered with Coping strategies scale. The results obtained through “t” test revealed change in coping strategies towards positive direction. Thus, we can conclude that physically challenged people who have better coping abilities can control their life events which leads to development of a positive, healthier and happier life in future.

Keywords: Physically challenged, Coping strategies.

INTRODUCTION:

In our society, people differ from each other on the basis of physical appearance, mental ability, cognitive ability and sensory perception and so on. But there are many people, who due to genetic mutation, environmental effect and accidents differ in anatomical structure and functions. They are not able to perform some activities with that organ. Thus, leading to restriction or inability to perform their roles which becomes a challenge to these people. Today, it is estimated, 1.6 per cent of the Indians, around 16 million people are inflicted with physical disabilities

The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined the terms “impairment”, “disability” and “handicap” in 1980. Physically handicapped are also known as loco motor disabilities, orthopaedic disabilities and health impairments. The term physical disability is related to a physical deformity or disability of the skeletal system and associated motor function. Many people who meet with the accident or any other cause of physical disability face difficulty in adjusting or rehabilitating in normal life. They go through severe physical and psychological trauma. Current review of literature suggests that physical disability has multiple negative effects on an individuals thinking, self-concept, expectation from self and others, motivation, life goals, aspirations, self-esteem, self-confidence. They significantly felt loss of control in their life. They felt that whatever happened in their life was because of their bad luck, unexpected circumstances, bad omen or someone elses fault. Coping refers to the specific efforts, both behavioural and psychological, that people employ to master, tolerate, reduce or minimize stressful events. Coping is expending conscious effort to solve personal and interpersonal problems and seeking to master, minimize or tolerate stressPsychological coping mechanisms are commonly termed as coping strategies or coping skills. The term coping generally refers to adaptive or constructive methods employed by people to solve a particular problem and reduce stress levels. It was observed by the researcher that people feel really motivated by seeing positive videos and movies which gives them insight to think alternative ways to live their life. Movies inspire us to understand the meaning and purpose of our life. It helps us to focus on positive side of our life and encourages to start from the beginning and reach the horizon of our life. Best part of such movies is that it touches the heart of the individuals due to which they make plans to modify their present way of coping strategies. They indulge in developing better plans to overcome their life obstacles and even get motivation to implement their new plans.

Radwan (2018) explained that when people watch a movie they identify with one of the actors and as a result their emotions change according to the events that actor goes through. People usually identify with the actors who resemble them. A self-made businessman who is going through business troubles will most likely identify with Will Smith in the movie pursuit of happiness because he shares the same problems with him. In other words, we identify with the actor who resembles our life the most and based on that choice we made our emotions change. It is because your subconscious mind can't really differentiate between a real and an imaginary experience it usually believes that you have gone through what the actor you identified with went through. That's why you might get an ego boost after watching your hero saving the world simply because your mind believed that you did it.

OBJECTIVE:

To study level of coping among physically challenged group.

HYPOTHESIS:

Motivational movies with successive follow ups would enhance the level of coping towards positive direction.

METHODOLOGY:

SAMPLE:

The present investigation was carried out on 100 participants, with age ranging between 20 to 35 years. The minimum educational qualification was senior secondary level and middle socio economic status

TOOLS:

The following measure were administered-

Coping strategies scale was developed by Srivastava (2001). The test aims to describe varieties of coping behavior underlying five major categories of coping strategies based on combination of operation and orientation of coping behavior. It comprises of 50 items which can be endorsed on a uniform five point Likert scale anchored almost always (4) to never (0).

PROCEDURE:

The researcher meet with 100 physically challenged participants at vocational rehabilitation centre, karkardooma, New Delhi. All the 100 participants were selected on the basis of their age, educational qualification, socio-economic status and cause of disability i.e. accidental cases only within the period of three years. Series of five motivational movies (Guzaarish, Margarita with a straw, Dosti, Soorma and Sadma) were shown to the participants over duration of one month. Coping strategies scale was administered on first day and later it was administered again after showing them five motivational movies. So, a Pre and post design was employed.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION:

To achieve the purpose of the study the obtained data was analysed through “t” test.

It indicates that the subjects have improved in rationalized cognitive restructuring. Hence, this proves the hypothesis that motivational movies with successive follow ups would enhance the level of coping towards positive direction. The subjects coping ability increased after viewing motivational movies.

Mojdeh et. at. (2013) indicated that watching movie could reduce family membersanxiety during surgery. The findings suggested that movie might be a simple and cost-effective tool to help family members to manage anxiety during surgery of their relatives.

Zacks et.al. (2014) studying the brain has begun to find out how films create such visceral responses in us. It turns out there are complex processes happening in multiple areas of the brain that allow us to get swept up in a movie and motivate us.

CONCLUSION:

The results discussed above indicate that there was a significant positive effect of motivational movies on coping strategies of physically challenged adults

Future research need to be concluded in order to verify the present findings. The findings of the present study should be seen as a guideline for future research rather than as definite answers to the research questions.
